In Charleston, the Douglas home had been a center of political and social life. Young Silas would sit quietly in the parlor and listen as the leaders of South Carolina talk politics. He had been told by his father, “Son, listen to a man long enough and he will tell you what’s on his mind.” Silas did not completely understand it, but he knew it was profound. He kept the saying in his memory over the years. The older he got, the more he understood it.

Chapter 8

Besides combing a lot of back issues and taking notes, Silas made other observations at the newspaper. He noticed that the Editor loved to tell stories. He enjoyed those extra four-page sections he inserted every-so-often in the paper. He always had one or two going. Today’s had been about the Steamboat story and next week’s would be about the American Indians. Editor had planned to run the Indian story today but the timing was better on the Steamboat story. Some of his editor friends may have argued that holding the Steamboat story till next week, just one issue before the trial on the 24th might have been better.
